Spousal Support Overview
"Spousal support" is the name for alimony in California. Spousal support is money that one spouse pays to the other to help support the other after a divorce has been filed.
The court may order a spouse to pay an amount necessary for the support of the other, consistent with the factors set forth in the law. Temporary spousal support may be ordered to enable the supported spouse to pay his or her customary living expenses until the case is completed. Orders for temporary support may be modified or terminated by the court before the divorce judgment is entered.
Permanent or long-term support may be ordered after a divorce is finalized. Long-term support may differ in amount from temporary support. The duration of long-term support may vary depending on a number of factors, and the judge has discretion in setting the dollar amount of long-term spousal support.
